After an elite season earning both conference and sectional championships, Coach Kelley Russell's Girls' Cross Country team finished second in this weekend's TMSAA State Championship Meet in Clarksville. This is the program's highest finish in team history.
Veteran team captain Elizabeth Coward led the team with an impressive performance, as our number one runner finishing 9th out of 123 athletes in a time of 13.20.49 (one spot out of All State distinction). She had a course PR of over 25 seconds. 6th grader Kenady Deal was the team's number two runner making her state debut in impressive fashion while cracking the top 20, coming in 18th with a time of 13:56.53. 6th grader Lilla Harrell turned in her best performance to date with a career PR of nearly 30 seconds, finishing 23rd overall. With only 2 seconds shy of her career PR, Team Captain Brooke Nelson finished 32nd at 14:21.5. Finishing 47th, 6th grader Elin Bryan with a 14:58.49 time, and veteran Mariam El Kammash anchored the team's efforts with her 15:54.68.
RCS Boys Cross Country was well represented by individual competitors Kaleb Turner and Brayden Brown. 8th grader and Team Captain Kaleb Turner finished in the top 20 with a solid performance. He came in 16th out of 133 athletes with a time of 12:25.80 while 7th grader Brayden Brown made his State debut in impressive fashion by coming away with a career PR of 23 seconds, peaking at the perfect time. He finished 44th with a time of 13:10.22.
Coach Kelley Russell also returned with some hardware as well, receiving the State Runner-Up Coach's Award.
